If you search for the history of the boerboel, you will find many different story's

The history of the Boerboel is a very uncertain. many humans see the history of the Boerboel in the time of Alexander the Great, where a large dog was used for the hunt and for the fight with animals.

Others see the beginnings in the time of the first Dutch settlers in the Cape region. The settlers (beside that Dutchmen, the Germans, Portuguese, Italian, Frenchman etc..) had their strongest dogs brought for Protection against the uncertainties of the land at the time.

Here it becomes also clear that with the Boerboel not being a certain dog breed, but rather a mixture of all original European large dog breeds.

And then these dogs undertook the great treck from the Cape to today's Gauteng (Johannesburg/Pretoria) with 1450km air line. Only the strongest and most athletic animals made it through this journey. There are statements that that Boerboel at the this time was probably the Rhodesian Ridgeback and more similar to a Molosser.

There are many variations over the origin of the Boerboels. However, there are no assurances that the Boerboel is bred from one, or indeed from a few breeds of dogs.

The Boerboel is a part of South African history.
